Rod Cell
The human retina consists of six different layers, each containing numerous neuronal cell types. When sectioned sagittally, the retina looks like a bizarre layer cake. Ramón y Cajal won the Nobel Prize in 1906 for his contributions to anatomy. His observations of neurons lead him to develop the Neuron Theory which established neurons as individual cells that communicate with each other. Rod Cells are responsible for detecting low levels of light, but not color. The enameled details on the sculpture represent depolarization. Depolarization is a process that transforms the visual input into the eye into electrical and chemical signals.
